So you end up in Bangalore!

You found your dream job in the city to be, atleast thats what you thought, until you went house-hunting.

When i first moved into bangalore, i took one good look at those hell-holes called PGs, and decided either its going to be an independent house/apartment, or iam packing up my things and getting back home. The shear magnitude of the manipulation these PG-owners do is stupefying. And imagine all those BE-MBA working in Infosys-Wipro-and-Whatnot, spending every minute at home confined to a 100sq feet space.

For example, I saw this PG in Koramangala, the owner's family shared the same kitchen with the PG, the hall was divided into 4rooms with wooden partition, barely enough space for a cot, the bags are to be shoveled under the cot i presume. The entire floor which is meant to accommodate a family of mabbe 6, was converted to a PG of 20. And to top it up, the "family" meant, the husband, wife and kids, imagine some weirdo strolling in his macho-shorts around your space. Shessh! And the bathrooms for 20 was 2, yes you heard me right, just 2 bathrooms! This hell-hole charges 3000bucks/month inclusive of food. And the food, though i wasnt enterprising enough to taste it, heard that it goes hand-in-hand with the decor!

Now, why would such a place exist?
Mostly cause of the proximity to the place of work, I would rather live in a hell-hole next to my office rather than spend all my waking hours waiting in Bangalore traffic.

But, is that reason enough?
i saw a PG in BTM, where the car garage is converted into 4rooms. The place was dirty, damp and definitely cramped. And the girls staying there were shelling out minimum 3-4k for that dump. By the way 3-4k is GOOD money, on the highway from bangalore to chennai, u can have "3dosas and 4vadas" for 10rupees, its still the same country!

Are these brilliant young working women, fodder for these house-owners?
In their desperation to find a place to live and save money, they end up in these PGs, first one week is shear desperation, then they get used to it, make friends, every month begins with plans to find little better place to stay. But they never move out, its usually a transfer or marriage that gets them moving.

And the unlucky few, who cannot stand the nightmare, end up dancing to a very different ugly tune, its called the DEPOSIT! this is how it works, you pay these PG-guys 5months rent as a security deposit, its like donating money to the mafioso, you will never get it back!!! you might die on them, but forget the deposit!

Is there no escape?
Bangalore, isnt all PGs. I have had stayed in three places in here, an independent-house and 2independent-apartments, everytime the next place better then the the previous one. It isnt very expensive either, within 5k, i could manage the rent, food and transport. Lucky enuf never to get into the PG rut.

So what?
I havent heard of a good PG either in Chennai or Bangalore, they are always manipulative and crappy. And the girls keep flooding these places year after year. Shouldnt there be some sort of association to filter out the good from the ugly, so that these PG owners dont go unchallenged! We have the Internet? write about your PG-woos, so that others wouldnt fall in the same pattern.

By the way house-brokers, arent humans :). And 3-4k is quite a lot of money!!!

I keep listening to so many PG woes, owners misbehaving with the girls, money squeezed out of them for every loose screw.... why dont you do something about it? atleast get out of there asap!
